“I am Katie Chavarria. I am married and have a 3-month-old baby girl name, Luna. I was born and raised in Guatemala. I graduated from George Mason University with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. I have worked in a childcare setting for two years. I absolutely love working with children. I think it’s such a fun and rewarding experience.
“I have learned that children are fully capable of reaching their full potential with support of their teachers and the environment in a classroom setting. As an educator, we have the knowledge and experience to guide children to motivate and encourage them to become independent. Children are able to learn more through free play, sensory play and through direct experience and as educators we must provide the appropriate engaging lessons. Each child is unique and we should encourage each child to reach their goal within their capability and not be compared to others. As educators we must find each child’s interest, academic level and developmental needs. We serve as their mentors, models and guide.
“The environment plays an important role for children to learn. The child’s learning environment must be physically and emotionally safe for students. The likelihood of children learning and being happy is greatly increased by how the classroom is set up and the teacher’s attitude. Each classroom should embody a safe and self-inviting environment where children are free within limits to find activities to do. Children have an amazing imagination and creativity therefore they should be free express themselves as they want to. This allows children to learn from one another. We as educators help children learn every day but they also teach us something special every day.”
